AlmostJesusFest 2008

A friend of mine has been doing a campus ministry, I've heard good things about it, and I'm eager to visit and see how it's going. I haven't had a chance to visit yet, but I have a huge desire to run a campus ministry. I feel like I hear Jesus saying, "Do you not say, 'There are still four months and then comes the harvest'? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look at the fields, for they are already white for harvest!" A college campus is a prime location for evangelism, and I don't know of anywhere else that you can find such a huge population of people who are so actively searching for meaning in their lives. What better place than a college campus to tell people about the only true meaning of their lives?

On Saturday, the ministry hosted an event on campus. Now, it was a gorgeous day out, and the stage was perfect for the sort of event that they had, and there were lots of people there, and the music and the masses brought some guests from campus wandering around and checking out what exactly it was that was going on. But there was something missing...

They had free Chic-fil-A chicken nuggets and burritos from Chipotle, and free bottled water with information about the church. To get the stuff, you had to register, so they captured your phone number and e-mail address ... but there was something missing.

The bands played and people stood and cheered, and there was a hotdog eating contest and a race down the hill backwards. They stood on ladders and tossed money in the air for the spectators to chase down, and they shot t-shirts into the crowd with a giant slingshot ... but something was missing.

Jesus. The bands played, and none of them mentioned Jesus. The emcee ran the event, but I never heard Jesus or God or grace or a call to repentance. I never heard about the Holy Ghost. I never heard about redemption. We all showed up, and we had a great time. I included pictures of me and Heidi and Chris at the party, but ... what about Jesus?

I love rock music. I love Christian rock music. Some of my favorite bands rock, and rock hard. But they rock about Jesus. I love listening to Delirious? and the Supertones and DC Talk (and, as a side note, if you haven't heard Delirious?'s new album "Kingdom of Comfort," then you need to check it out. It is fabulous), and I love, absolutely love, music that rocks. But what good is a campus outreach event that doesn't mention the savior?

For those that organized the event, know that I love you and what you're doing. But I'm bothered by "Christian" bands that don't sing about Jesus. At some point, they cease to be a Christian band and they become a rock band that is comprised of Christians. I wish that there had been a band like Delirious?, that would get up and sing about Jesus' blood, or about grace and mercy. That would be worth rocking the hill.
